Curt Butler to demonstrate Japanese concept of Notan at August MAG meeting

Curt Butler to demonstrate “Notan” at August meeting of Matthews Artists Guild

“Notan” is the Japanese word for dark-light harmony. Notan is also used to establish balance in a painting’s composition. Gastonia artist Curt Butler will be demonstrating his use of this tool to enhance composition when planning a work of art to members and friends of the Matthews Artists Guild on August 12, 2014.
Please join the Matthews Artists Guild on Tuesday, August 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the McDowell Arts Center, 123 E. McDowell Street in Matthews for this very special demonstration. Meetings are free and open to the public starting at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments and a presentation by our guest artist at 7:00 p.m.

Butler received both a B.A from Kent State University and a M.F.A from Savannah College of Art and Design. He has taught at various institutions including Braitman Studio, Gaston Day School, Gaston College and Gaston School of the Arts. In 2004, he was recognized and honored with Teacher of the Year award at Gaston Day School. He has also hosted a number of guild workshops throughout the Southeast for art students as well as professional artists. He considers himself an artist who teaches and enjoys sharing his passion and knowledge with others to create a journey for someone else.
His own journey has lead him to start his own business called Butler Studio, where he creates between 90 to 120 paintings a year for galleries, corporations and private collections. In 2009, Butler Studio opened a gallery/studio in downtown Gastonia where he currently teaches small classes and paints full time.
Curt’s interest in impasto and scumbling techniques is evident in his currently medium of oil and encaustic. The word encaustic literally means to “burn in” and involves a heating tool of some kind with the addition of colored pigments or oil paints mixed into the wax.

En Plein Air Buds
MAG sponsors a group of artists who paint landscapes at various sites weekly throughout the year. This is known as "En Plein Air," french for "in plain air" and the practice sparked the Impressionist movement. Lunch follows a morning of painting.
July 15 Paint Out
Paint with the Buds at Banner Nursery, 4400 Monroe Rd Charlotte, NC 28205  Be sure you bring your art supplies, hat, sunscreen, camp chair if you want to sit, and lots of water to drink. It's not far from Lupies.
While they are working on giving more lead time, sites or final details are announced just prior to the event, so request to be on the Plein Air Buds mailing list via presidentmag@gmail.com.
Places to Paint Out
The Buds are always looking for suggestions. Luchi suggested the Lavender Farm in SC where our own Cynthia Howard is teaching a workshop which is unfortunately sold out. Seewww.labastideslavendes.com   May I suggest... Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, The Royal Gardens on 7th St., Campbell Greenhouse behind Mr K's on South Blvd near Atherton Mill. Roundtree off Old Pineville Rd and Growers in Pineville on South Blvd. and always my favorite Humter Farm in Weddington. Anyone else have an idea?
Be on the lookout for great places to paint out and send suggestions. Looking  forward to hearing where they plan to go next. Thanks Debbie.

Matthews Artists Guild hosts Charlotte Artist Dottie Leatherwood at June meeting

Please join members and friends of the Matthews Artists Guild for a demonstration by Charlotte artist, Dottie Leatherwood, on Tuesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the McDowell Arts Center, 123 E. McDowell Street in Matthews.  Meetings are free and open to the public starting at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments and a presentation by our guest artist at 7:00 p.m.
Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Leatherwood always had a passion for art. For the last ten years while her children were small, she ran a successful business painting murals and decorative pieces. Now that her children are older, she decided to return to her love of painting full time and studied with several well known artists.  She lives in Charlotte with her family.
“Painting to me is about capturing and preserving the emotion and energy of a moment in time with the simple instruments of brush and paint. Having grown up on the coast, I always draw my inspiration from nature and the bright clear light that I grew up with. My art is all about layers of rich vibrant color and vigorous brushstrokes. I am drawn to patterns and strong shapes and my painting is often more about these observations and less about the subject itself. If I can make the observer feel as though they are immersed and transported through the color and enthusiasm of my painting then I have succeeded, “ said Leatherwood.  Her work can be seen at www.dottieleatherwood.com.
Leatherwood has received numerous awards including: Charlotte Business Journal  2013 Book of Lists - "bird's eye view"; Honorable Mention: Matthews Alive Art Show and Competition; Finalist: in Artiste Winery Art Label Contest; 1st Place Winner: Charlotte Artist Guild Spring Juried Exhibition; 2nd Place Winner: Ann & Bill Litaker Annual Juried Exhibit; and she has been co-host four times for the Artists Helping Artists Blogspot Radio Show.
The Matthews Artists Guild is a nonprofit organization that welcomes and encourages both the beginner and established artist.  In addition to our free monthly programs, the organization offers weekly plein air painting on Tuesdays, life drawing on Wednesday evenings, critique sessions every other month, art shows, art related field trips, workshops and seminars.  For additional information contact: (704) 321-7275 or email info@matthewsartistsguild.org, follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@MatthewsArtists).

Canard Line Artist Gina Strumpf at May MAG Meeting

Canard Line Artist Gina Strumpf shares her journey at Matthews Artists Guild

Please join members and friends of the Matthews Artists Guild for a demonstration by renowned Canard Line artist Gina Strumpf on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the McDowell Arts Center, 123 E. McDowell Street in Matthews.  Meetings are free and open to the public starting at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments and a presentation at 7:00 p.m.
Gina Strumpf knew from an early age she was born to be an artist. Her pens and pencils were her constant companions. Gina was mentored by acclaimed artist, Josette Gourley.  She received two scholarships to prestigious art schools, Ringling College of Art and Traphagen School of Fashion, on her way to becoming a fashion illustrator. Fashion was a passion but instead of the drawing board,  it took her to the "catwalk"  were she worked as a professional model for 12 years. After marriage, raising a family and a very successful career in real estate, it was finally time to get back to her first love. And art was there waiting. Her brushes haven't left her hands for many years now. With time to make up, Gina is devoted to learning and improving her art daily.
Gina is an internationally recognized impressionist oil painter, whose work is sought after by collectors in the USA and Europe. She has mentored with nationally acclaimed artists, Kevin MacPherson, Andy Braitman and Connie Winters along with studies and workshops with many respected artists/teachers in Canada, Southern France and Tuscany.  She has honed her skills in record time, a prolific painter with natural talent and a quick study. She is completing her life long dream and her true calling.
Gina's paintings have been shown in numerous juried regional and national shows as well as multiple solo shows. She is a featured artist in galleries throughout the Southeast from Washington, DC to Charleston, SC with private and corporate collectors throughout the USA, and Europe.
Well-versed in multiple mediums (oil, acrylic and water color) her paintings are rich in color, mood and spirit.  Gina's work is best described as modern impressionist.  As an artist, she would like her paintings to represent the passion she feels in her subject matter.  Gina is recognized by her distinctive style in her popular "Red Umbrella" European and New York cityscapes. She loves painting en plein air and traveling for inspiration whenever possible to new and exciting locations. Gina is a sought after workshop instructor, keynote speaker and the resident artist on Cunard Lines.
Gina's engaging and passionate teaching style with an encouraging devotion to her students is what makes her workshops such a huge success. For more information, please see Gina’s website,http://ginastrumpfstudio.com/.

Greg Barnes to demonstrate landscape painting techniques April 8 at MAG

i
On Tuesday, April 8, the Matthews Artists Guild will host Greg Barnes at the McDowell Arts Center, 123 E. McDowell Street, Matthews.  Reception starts at 6:30 p.m. Barnes will demonstrate his blend of realistic and impressionistic techniques in landscapes at 7 p.m.

Greg Barnes received his formal training at Wake Forest University receiving a BFA in 1985. Under the instruction of many fine teachers he learned painting, printmaking, sculpture, and figure drawing.
Following college, Greg entered a career path that included technical illustration, computer graphics, computer-based training, and multimedia programming. Throughout those years, Greg always kept his brushes and charcoal close at hand.
After 911, he and his wife Janet decided to take a leap of faith, pursuing a fine art career full time. Greg quickly found portrait work, which eventually led him to pastels. A few week-long plein air workshops set him in on his current course.
Landscapes are Greg’s love. He enjoys painting on location, and as a result of working quickly, leans towards impressionism. A mix of realistic and impressionistic elements give his pieces a life of their own, while a free and creative use of color punctuates his style.
Greg currently splits his time between painting in his studio/gallery in Charlotte, NC, selling at national art shows around the country, and teaching.  For more information, please seewww.barnesstudio.com.

As a plein air landscape artist, Greg enjoys connecting with the spirit of the place in which he is painting. The result is usually more than just a pretty picture. Plein Air Buds update:
"Hey Buds,
See you at Matthews' McDowell Arts Center (MAC) at 100 McDowell St in downtown (between the Baptist Church and the Elementary School and across the street from the Matthews Community Center) Tuesday morning at 10 AM. I will be there at 9:30along with Jennifer Benson to set up some still life scenes. Anyone else want to bring things? Just email me and let me know to expect you. Jennifer is bringing some stoneware. I will stop by HT and get some flowers and fruit. Bring along whatever you think would be interesting to paint. We will leave at 11:30 and go out to lunch. Unless someone wants to suggest another place, we will stick with Panera Bread.

Also, did I tell you Colten said we could use the MAC the first Tuesday of every month for still life painting from now until June? Yeah, he's a nice guy. So after 2/18, our next time together will be 3/4 at the MAC. Then we will resume plein air painting the rest of the time… weather permitting. "

Many thanks to Debbie for this update and for arranging this opportunity.

Pastel Artist Kurt Weiser demonstrates color layering at Matthews Artists Guild

Join members and friends of the Matthews Artists Guild for a demonstration by  renowned pastel artist Kurt Weiser on February 11, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the McDowell Arts Center, 123 McDowell Street in Matthews.  Meetings are free and open to the public starting at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments and presentation at 7:00 p.m.
“I was drawn to pastels because of their true colors. Techniques of layering and color combinations challenge me to understand the color wheel and all of its components. I feel in control of every step when creating a new piece by strategizing each layer with form, color and composition,”  said Weiser.  Kurt was born into a creative family and his love of art and outdoors led him to choose a career in landscape architecture.  Although he enjoyed success designing community parks, recreation facilities, and landscape plans for commercial businesses and private residences nationwide, he felt something was missing.  Marriage, family and the opportunity to work at home spurred his interest in fine art using pastel as his medium.

Weiser is a member of the Master’s Circle of the International Association of Pastel Societies and an Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America as well as the Pastel Society of North Carolina and the Piedmont Pastel Society.   With awards too numerous to list, Kurt has shown his work all over the country in competitions, magazines and galleries.  For more information, please see Weiser’s website at http://kweiser.com/home.html.
