Featuring Artist

A Short Course in How to Create a Better Painting

A look inside the planning and execution process of a watercolor artist.  Through a Power Point presentation and examples of work, you will see how an image goes from idea, to photo, to painting.
I will also bring a few paintings and the planning steps used to make the plan for the painting.
A native of South Carolina, Anne is now beginning her fifth decade of creating art.     At the age of 12, her school system provided the opportunity for art classes.  It was the first step awakening that artist in her.   The passion has existed within Anne since that time has only grown stronger through the years.  In 1975 she began to focus almost exclusively on watercolor.  To learn more about Anne visit her website at http://annehightower-patterson.com/
Anne will be conducting a workshop at the McDowell arts center on March 15, 2017.  visit http://matthewsartistsguild.weebly.com/shows-and-workshops.html for more information.

Larry Ferguson
LEAVE YOUR BRAIN AT HOME!
The things I’ve learned while teaching art

A proponent of the Abstract Expressionist approach, Larry brings some of that immediacy to Realistic painting as well.  “Sometimes we overthink this thing called painting,” he says.  “But in the time spent agonizing over a color choice, you could have painted the darn thing three times!”

“Teachers say, ‘Paint what you see.’  Then they turn around and say, ‘Use your imagination.’
Teaching art is one of those lucky professions where you can talk out of both sides of your mouth—and be right both times!”

Larry has been a commercial film director, scriptwriter, television art director (national Emmy finalist), media consultant, professional artist and educator.  His artwork has appeared in many films, commercials and television programs, and a mural is part of a permanent exhibit at the Schiele Nature Museum.  Larry currently teaches Painting at several Charlotte locations, including Mint Hill Arts, where his next class starts March 1.

Cost $35
McDowell Arts Center
123 E. McDowell Street

Sharron Burns has a BA in Fine Arts from Christopher Newport University.  Her works reflect her love of still life paintings of all kinds from flowers to fruit and vegetables to shells and marbles. She enjoys exploring the diffused facets, light reflections and clarity of glass and crystal combined with nature’s abundance. It depicts the crispness, freshness and transparency of watercolors. “I believe that only watercolor can portray glass with accuracy.”  She is a Signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina.

For a morning, we will be studying glass with its properties and variations.  It’s a fascinating subject!  No two are alike.
